The best of the French fighter designs; introduced January 1940. By May 1940, only 79 aircraft were in service, the bulk of the 256 manufactured being returned to the factories for needed modifications. It continued to be produced and employed by the Vichy French, German, Italian, and Bulgarian air forces. The last aircraft was retired in 1953.
